The Voidz formed in 2013 originally called Julian Casablancas+The Voidz and announced their first album Tyranny in June 2014 with a release date of September 23 of that year. Julian had explained the main goal of the album was to be an anti-corporate and protest album. This is also supported by The Voidz’s song Human Sadness which was the first song to be revealed from Tyranny. The 11-minute song talks about the horrors of the world and the darkness that people have to endure throughout history. The music video showcases many of the world’s ugliness including prostitution, the Vietnam War, the War on Terror, riots, police oppression, domestic violence, drug abuse, death, and natural disasters. Tyranny strayed away from The Strokes' normal garage-rock format which is what Casablancas wanted, introducing a type of weirdness to music through this album featuring more heavy metal and punk-rock influence with screaming lyrics, large emphasis on guitar riffs and bass, and overall uncertainty.
2018: Virtue: A New Direction
On December 18, 2017, The Voidz would post a video on their YouTube channel showcasing a name change from Julain Casablancas+The Voidz to simply The Voidz. This video also announces a second album that would come out in 2018 which would later be announced as Virtue on January 25, 2018. Casablancas stated that this album would take a new direction aiming for a much wider audience than Tyranny did. Leave it in My Dreams was the first song to be released from Virtue which highlighted the brand new style The Voidz were experimenting with. Virtue was released on March 30, 2018, and the album itself diverged from the heavy and dark themes of Tyranny to a pop-synth and new-wave style of music with much more emphasis in synthesize beats and a calmer tone of voice, which they would stick to for years to come.
2018-2024: Singles and Infinity Repeating
After the release of Virtue and until 2024, The Voidz's entire discography consisted only of singles. Starting in 2018 with Coul as a Ghoul, 2019 with two Mac DeMarco-produced songs: The Eternal Tao (2.0 in 2021) and Did My Best, 2020 with Alien Crime Lord a song made for a GTA Online update, 2023 with Prophecy of The Dragon and Flexorcist, and Spring 2024 releasing All The Same. With the exception of the two Mac DeMarco-produced songs which was more emotionally driven, the singles followed and expanded upon the style that was introduced in Virtue. In 2023, with the release of the Random Access Memories 10th Anniversary the collaborated Daft Punk and The Voidz song Infinity Repeating, which went unreleased for ten years, would be released as the last Daft Punk song.
2024: Like All Before You: Controversial On Arrival
In late June 2024, Seekings Instagram posted an original photo of Julian Casablancas in a studio for The Voidz. The background of the image shows a supposed track list for a new album, which was immediately pointed out by fans. On July 4th, The Voidz announced their new album, Like All Before You (LABY), set to release in September of that year. Soon after the art cover was revealed causing a large amount of backlash against the band for the use of AI art. When The Voidz posted about their new album, it left many fans confused if it was an actual album or a compilation album especially since the tracklist did not include the songs that were on the Seekings Instagram post, instead it contained three singles that were released in 2023 and 2024 and seven new tracks (two of which were less than two minutes). Like All Before You was released on September 20, 2024, with heavely negative feedback from the community, with many feeling that the album was lazy and poorly made for it to be an actual album. Most of the songs used heavy amounts of autotune, an overpowering synth, and unintellgiable singing, showing the growing resentment against synth in the community. After its release, Julian would confirm that LABY is a compilation album with songs that were meant to be released as singles until their actual third album (now fourth) was finished in an interview with Apple Music.
